Clio Artist Spotlight: Julia Noble

Artist Julia Noble

"My aim is to create joyous, uplifting artworks that bring happiness and contentment into the world. I do this by using vibrant colours and lively compositions to create visually captivating pieces. My work is mixed media and uses a unique blend of handmade paper, machine stitching, along with water-soluble crayons, acrylic paint, and resin.

Handmade paper offers distinct qualities. I love its imperfections and irregularities. It is on one hand very fine and fragile but at the same time it is very resilient and strong enough to withstand stitch without tearing.

I use stitch because of the extra texture and depth that it adds to the work, but also as a reference to my grandmother, a seamstress for Burberry, who taught me to sew as a child when we holidayed with her. She also taught me a deep appreciation of the skill involved.

I choose to use water-soluble crayons because the colours are what they are and the variations you can create are because of the placement of one colour next to another. Additionally, because they are water-soluble, when I apply resin to the crayons it enhances the colours, making them appear more vibrant and alive. Resin with its glossy and translucent properties also provides an enchanting layer of depth to the artwork. The way the light plays on the surface enhances the mesmerising effect.

My inspiration comes from the world around us, places, shapes, forms, and colours. The multiple processes that I use are intended to create works that convey messages of hope, resilience, and optimism, invoking feelings of joy in these challenging times.

The series that I am presenting at Clio Art Fair were inspired by the amazing Gees Bend quiltmakers – I discovered their incredible work during lockdown in the UK and was very moved by their sense of community – something that felt missing during a period of intense isolation. The idea behind these 15 works to be displayed is to create an unashamedly joyous wall – or community - of kaleidoscopic colour."

Julia Noble has showcased her works in the past Clio Art Fair's 17th edition in September 5-8, 2024. Here is our short interview with her!

Julia, can you please describe your art in four words?

Joyous, colourful, uplifting, kaleidoscopic.

What inspires your art?

I take inspiration from the world around me - places I visit and the colours I see.

How would you describe your experience at Clio Art Fair?

Sadly, I wasn't able to attend in person for circumstances outside my control, but Clio was amazing in enabling my work to be present and hanging it beautifully. They also did a fantastic job of managing my sales and keeping me informed. It was a shame not to meet the other artists and visitors but I reached out to a couple of the artists near me who were super lovely and messaged me when I made sales and sent me images. Despite not being there, it was a great experience.
