Artist, Ola Rondiak in her studio
"I am a mixed media painter and sculptor who explores the transformation of transgenerational pain into awareness and strength. My inspiration stems from my grandmother whom I never met, as well as my family's experiences of living in Ukraine during the historical events of WWII, Stalin's repressions, The Orange Revolution, The Revolution of Dignity, and the current full scale russian invasion.
My contemporary female portraits have emerged as a metaphor for Ukraine's determined and resilient spirit. In my collages I combine elements of historical family documents, letters, and current newspaper clippings, reminding us of the often unheeded wisdom of past ancestors. My "motanka" sculptures are inspired by ancient Ukrainian ragdolls passed down as a talisman from mother to daughter for good health and fortune. I originally created them out of plaster of Paris as a symbol for healing, as this is the material we use to treat broken bones.
The insights, skills, and humility which I have gained as a psychotherapist and as a mother continue to influence my artistic journey. This experience directly impacts my chosen materials as well as the concepts. I have learned firsthand how art not only heals, protects, and unites, but is also a necessary ingredient for survival. I believe that culture provides and formulates our identity and proves our humanity. Art allows us to discover and nurture freedom within ourselves, despite difficult environmental or physical circumstances."
